Grantmaking Jobs Experience Material Compensation Growth

The annual Croner Compensation Survey of Foundations has been published for the 25th year.  The survey is conducted annually to provide up-to-date and complete market compensation and benefits data to grantmaking foundations in the United States. The survey data covers jobs specific to private foundations and jobs specific to community foundations.

As found in the results of the Croner Survey, noteworthy insights about compensation for positions in the foundation sector include:

  • All organization levels experienced material compensation growth from 2021 to 2022. The increases were driven by material increases in base salary.
  • All asset size categories experienced material compensation growth among private foundations from 2021 to 2022.   The growth was driven by strong growth in base salaries.
  • Community foundations experienced strong growth from 2020 to 2021.  The growth was driven by strong growth in base salaries.

In addition to trends in pay, the Croner report contains current and complete compensation data for jobs in the grantmaking foundation sector. The survey results cover in-depth data on pay and benefits.  It reports the total compensation proposition, including:

  • Pay by percentile for base salary, total cash compensation, estimated total compensation, and
  • Cost of benefits.
