The recently published results of the 2021 Croner Animation and Visual Effects Survey shows noteworthy trends in compensation from the past year.  The highlights below are extracts from Croner’s annual report of third-party market data for roles specific to producing animation and visual effects.

  • Base salaries increased year-over-year for the majority of individual contributor positions among U.S. animation and visual effects companies.
  • Base salaries decreased year-over-year for the majority of production leadership positions among U.S. animation and visual effects companies. This anomaly is due to movement of employees in and out of several leadership positions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a reduction in the amount of long-term incentive awards provided by some companies.  When comparing compensation movement from companies in the survey both years, compensation remained flat among production leadership positions.
  • Animation Art Director and Production Assistant are the pipeline positions with the most growth in base salary from 2020 to 2021.

The annual Croner Animation and Visual Effects Survey is the trusted industry resource specific to jobs that produce animation and visual effects for film, television and software games in the U.S. and Canada.  It provides compensation data on 426 animation and visual effects positions in the U.S.

The 2021 Report provides compensation data for 23 positions in Canada, including roles in Animation, Effects/Live Action, Producing, Story/Visual Development, Technical/Shot Production and Technology Systems Support.
