Visual Effects (VFX) Salaries Up

The recently published results of the 2020 Croner Animation and Visual Effects Survey— providing third party market data for jobs that produce animation and visual effects — shows these noteworthy trends in compensation over the past year:

  • Compensation for positions in the animation and visual effects industry grew steadily across all compensation elements for both production leadership and individual contributor levels. Average base salary growth among animation and visual effects companies with a match to the same position in both 2020 and 2019 rose an average of 4% for individual contributors.
  • Character Designer (journey individual contributor level) and Production Assistant are among pipeline positions with the most growth in base salary from 2019 to 2020.
  • The difference in compensation between the senior / lead individual contributor and the individual contributor is greatest among Story Artists.

Data published in the Croner Survey Results reflect practices as of March 1, 2020.  We anticipate some practices will change in response to impacts of COVID-19.  The Croner Company is conducting pulse surveys and industry roundtables to supplement these data and report changes to compensation practices.
